I'm the father of an almost nine year old girl in the third grade.  She's lovely, lively, sassy, loves her hamster and is, in many ways, like so many other of her nine year old friends.
I'm also a huge fan of podcasts and just today stumbled upon one that hit very close to home.  CBC Radio has a show / podcast called "Sleepover" which brings three people, each facing a problem they want to solve, together to talk about their issues.
This episode is about Charlie, a lovely, lively, sassy 8 year old who loves her Guinea Pig and whose insecurity about her reading skills impacts her self confidence and her friendships.  Hearing her talk about her problem with thoughtful, encouraging grown-ups was so familiar to me.
Her fears, worries and reactions mirror so many of the ones I hear around our own dinner table, and it was great to be able to sit back and listen to the conversation as an observer rather than as a participant.  It allowed me to think about my own parenting from a bit of distance, and made me feel better to know that I'm not the only one facing these parenting challenges.  It made me think about my own parenting and I hope you will find it useful as well.
